Can Eye Exercises Help Protect You From Glaucoma?

Why Glaucoma Needs Early Attention

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, often because of high pressure inside the eye. The damage builds slowly, and lost vision does not come back. Many people feel nothing in the early stage, so they miss it. I see this often in my clinic. As a Retina Surgeon and a Cataract Surgeon, I treat many patients who arrive late, after they have already lost part of their sight. Eye exercises and healthy habits cannot cure glaucoma. They can support your eye health and may slow its progress when you follow them along with proper treatment. Do not ignore small changes in vision.

Simple Eye Exercises I Suggest

Start with blinking. Close your eyes for two seconds, then blink fast for five seconds. Repeat for one minute. This keeps your eyes moist and cuts screen strain. Next, try palming. Rub your hands until they feel warm, then rest them gently over your closed eyes for a few minutes. Do not press. Focus shifting also helps. Hold a finger at arm’s length, bring it slowly closer to your nose, then look at something far away. Repeat ten times. These moves relax the eye muscles and may improve blood flow. Keep any eye massage very light.

Daily Habits That Protect Your Eyes

Walk for 30 minutes a day. Swimming and cycling work well too. Skip heavy weightlifting, head-down yoga poses, and holding your breath during hard effort, since these can raise eye pressure. Eat leafy greens, fish, citrus fruits, and nuts. Drink water in small sips through the day. Quit smoking and cut back on alcohol. Sleep well, and follow the 20-20-20 rule on screens. Wear UV-protective sunglasses outside. Most important, get your eyes checked every year after 40, or earlier if glaucoma runs in your family.
